As one of the oldest Marks & Spencers stores celebrates a new future, long serving staff have been looking back over their years of keeping customers happy.
The York Pavement branch, which started out as a Penny Bazaar in 1907, has been redeveloped to the Fashion and Food departments under one roof.
With a collective 80 years of service between them, Jackie Cammidge and Lesley Whittaker are looking forward to the exciting times ahead.
Jackie joined M&S straight from school in 1972 and is now the Customer Assistant Recruiter responsible for hiring the whole team.
She said: “I remember when the store covered just two floors and the clothes were displayed on style counters rather than hangers.”
Lesley started work at the M&S York Pavement store in 1967 and says a highlight was the staff canteen.
“We had a staff cook called Ethel who would make a roast dinner every week always followed by a delicious homemade pudding,” she said.
“It was great to sit down and have a proper dinner with your colleagues after a long day. It’s amazing how the family feel has stayed throughout the years.”
