A car also left the A169 between Pickering and Whitby, near Saltergate Bank. The Scarborough and Ryedale Mountain Rescue were called by Yorkshire Ambulance Service, amid reports two people were trapped, but police confirmed everyone was out of the car and safe before the mountain rescue team arrived.

They posted this video on their website showing the driving conditions as they responded to the call-out:

Earlier today, a van driver had a lucky escape when his vehicle overturned on a freezing A59 at Nether Poppleton.

An ambulance and North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue service were both called to the scene after the Vauxhall Vivaro flipped onto its roof and landed in a ditch, but the man suffered only minor injuries.

Earlier today, a two-car collision on the A64 at Hopgrove Roundabout forced police to close part of the westbound carriageway, although it was unclear whether the weather was a factor there.

A silver and a blue BMW collided at 1pm on Sunday at the Hopgrove roundabout, resulting in the drivers suffering minor injuries. Other motorists hit debris from the crash.

The crash blocked the road and emergency services remained on the scene until 4pm when it was re-opened.

Paul Richardson, deployment manager at North Yorkshire Police's control room, said: "There's lots of vehicle damage and debris, and it has done some damage to the highway furniture.

"The road was closed just off the Hopgrove roundabout."

The A64 crash was not an isolated incident as motorists across North Yorkshire struggled in icy conditions.

Police were also called to Rocks Lane, in Burniston, near Scarborough, at 8.30am on Sunday when a driver collided with a garden wall.

The man fled the scene but was arrested a short time later on suspicion of driving over three times the legal limit.

The road was closed for an hour and a half while the vehicle was removed.

Just before noon today, a 42-year-old woman suffered serious injuries when her Vauxhall Corsa collided with a black Vauxhall Vectra on the A61 at Baldersby, near Thirsk.

She was airlifted to James Cook Hospital in Middlesbrough. The Vectra driver, a 20-year-old man, his 19-year-old woman passenger and a two-year-old boy were all taken to Harrogate District Hospital with minor injuries.

Police ask anyone who saw either car before the collision, or who saw the crash, to phone 101.

In particular, officers want to trace the occupants of a gold coach believed to have been in the area.

The road was closed for around five-and-a-half hours to allow emergency services to attend to the casualties and to allow collision investigators to examine the scene, said a police spokesman.

Police are warning drivers to take care on the roads as temperatures continue to plummet over the coming days.

Mr Richardson added: "We are expecting more bad weather.

"Drivers should take their time, prepare for the journey and make sure they get from A to B safely."
