A FORMER culture and regeneration director of Brighton and Hove Council has joined York council as interim director of City and Environmental Services.

Sarah Tanburn has also worked in New Zealand helping restructure hospital services after devastating earthquakes, and for councils in the London Borough of Brent, Merton, and Southend-on-Sea.

City of York Council announced her interim appointment to fill the post vacated by Darren Richardson until a permanent replacement can be found.

A council spokesman said Ms Tanburn would stay in post for about a year to oversee the Local Plan process.

Chief executive Kersten England said: “Sarah brings much relevant experience from both private and public sectors and I look forward to her sharing her expertise with us.”

I really hope that this lady has the knowledge of Green Belt policy and Government Planning laws required to deal with this really important matter. Bringing people in from densely populated urban areas, to oversee the plan for a small city in rural North Yorkshire does not sound like common sense to me. We need people who have experience of York to do the best for us.

I am sure Ms Tanburn is a perfect fit for our current council. Firstly she appears to run a consultancy business meaning she will not be there for long will come in ride rough shot over everyone and be someone to blame who is no longer there when it all goes wrong.

I believe this is also the same Sarah Tanburn who when presented by the BBC with an alternative view on climate change (that it may not actually be solely caused by human activity) promptly wrote to the BBC apparently to complain that a view which differs from her own should not be allowed air time saying “ There is no need for “balance” in pieces about climate change.” A match made in heaven for a non listening council and should go down well with “no need to consult the public” Anne 20.

Correct - Ms Tanburn wrote a letter of complaint about Lord Nigel Lawson, saying he was 'from Lala Land'.

The left needs to reclaim social justice in England & Wales, as it has in Scotland. This is a good place to begin.

Not difficult to see why she got the job.......?!!!

I agree, this is trouble for York.

Looking through Ms Tanburn's cv (link to her consultancy website below), she has had very little experience with Local Plans. She delivered a cors strategy, but, there was no mention that this lead to an adopted Local Plan or LDF. Looks like she left her interim post before it got to EIPstage - just like she will do in York!

Her expertise seems to be regeneration and 'cultural' issues - the latter is a clue to what she's here for - to join the cultural political elite clique that is running the city. Her 'strategic vision' and 'organisational transformation' skills will also no doubt be applied to push through the 'change' agenda?!!!

This is an interim post in order to avoid open recruitment that would involve opposition councillors.

The choice of a politically active campaigner with very left wing views cannot be an accident.

I predict her interim post will run until May 2015.

This is yet another scandal to hit CYC. Any attempt at the senior team appearing politically neutral is now over.

I wonder if she knows what she's let herself in for.

And I wonder if she know's what a bunch of cynical prejudiced commentators she's going to get abuse from. Give the woman a chance before throwing mud? (Perhaps she'll never read the Press comments, so she'll never know....)

Res ipsa loquitur!

She won't give two tosses what concerned, well-informed York citizens think.

She's here to do a very well-paid job, with no risk, no pressure, no accountability. She will have time to blog, write books, tweet, sail etc, and indulge her comrades with ideological ideas, and ways of pushing the agenda.

It's what she does!
