PRIMARY pupils were invited by the Archbishop of York to celebrate St George’s Day in perfect English fashion with a game of cricket on the lawn at Bishopthorpe Palace.

Two year six classes from Archbishop of York CE School competed against each other in what has become their annual cricket match, which resulted in a tie, much to head teacher Jonathan Green's relief.

In previous years, the children have had the chance of a bat and bowl with Dr John Sentamu to help fly the flag for St George's Day, but he was unable to join in the fun this year. However, this did not stop the young sportsmen and women from enjoying the day, said Mr Green.

“The day couldn’t have gone better," he said. "The Archbishop’s staff were so lovely, serving the children juice and gingerbread, and a cup of coffee for the adults.

“The children absolutely loved their day at the Palace, and we’d like to thank the Archbishop for inviting us," he added.
