FIREFIGHTERS have taken steps to keep the public safe as gales continue to sweep North and East Yorkshire.

A platform ladder was used to deal with insecure Christmas decorations in Gowthorpe, Selby, this morning and an insecure sign was removed from a shop front in Whtiby.

In Ramsey Road, Bridlington, a metal shed, insecure due to high winds, was secured by firefighters using lines and paving slabs, and in Cliff Street, Bridlington, they used a hydraulic platform to remove loose lead from the roof of a property.

However, the three emergency services said there had not yet been a serious incident in the wind.

East Coast said that because of a forecast for high winds in the north of England, all services north of Doncaster were running at reduced speed until 2pm, adding up to two hours to journey times.
