CHRIS THORMAN says York City Knights’ maiden Co-operative Championship victory has to be “just the start”.

The player-boss led his charges to a 26-22 win over Swinton Lions at Huntington Stadium on Sunday – finally getting the Knights in the winners’ circle at the tenth attempt this season.

But, rather than bask in the long-awaited success, Thorman says his men must “think about the bigger picture”.

“Obviously I am really happy to get the win,” he said.

“It was a long time coming and it was a bit of an odd feeling.

“It was something of an anti-climax at the end because we have been so much better than we have shown over the last few months.

“I wanted to celebrate the victory – it is important to do so – but at the same time I wanted everyone to be aware that this is just the start.

“We are half-way through the season, there is still plenty to play for.

“People have been saying this is a season for rebuilding and for preparing for next year – with there being no relegation. There’s plenty to focus on.

“We have to think about the bigger picture so I don’t want to go over the top (about this victory).

“It’s great that everyone is happy but I genuinely believe this is the start, not the culmination.”
