NORRIS the Knight has bidden farewell to life as York City Knights' mascot after bowing out at the annual Mascot Grand National.

But don't worry, kids, a reincarnated Norris will be back next season.

Pete Miller, better known as Norris, has hung up his huge helmet for good after finally making his long-awaited debut at Huntingdon Racecourse in the race involving dozens of sporting mascots from all over the country.

"I want to get my own life back," said 49-year-old Pete, trying to shed his Norris persona. "I want to go to games and just support the team from the stands."

Pete, who was also Wobby the Wasp back in the latter years of York Wasps, has been Norris since the Knights started. As well as cheerleading on match-days, the role involves helping out with the club's work in the community.

He said: "I've missed the odd game here or there through injury - I've got a dodgy shoulder - but other than that I've done pretty much every match."

Norris was a 40-1 outsider in the Mascot Grand National - a 220-yard six-hurdle chase at Huntingdon - just below 33-1 shot Yorkie the Lion, York City FC's famed furry follower, in the betting.

It's fair to say neither of them finished in the top ten in a race won by Mickey the Monkey, a Kick For Life mascot.

Anyone interested in becoming Norris - and there has been a fair amount of interest already - should contact the Knights office on 01904 758234.

Pete gave a word of advice. "Be warned - that helmet is pretty heavy."
