JASON Golden and Scott Rhodes were the big winners at last night's York City Knights awards ceremony.

The event, again held at York Racecourse, was packed out as usual with more than 300 people attending, despite the club's relegation from National League One.

Leeds Rhinos loanee Golden, who has now signed for Super League outfit Wakefield, was named the clubs' Player of the Year, as voted for by the players.

He was denied a double, however, by the smallest of margins as Rhodes - one of the players to have agreed a new deal with the Knights for next season - collected the Press/Collier Plant Hire Player of the Year accolade.

Paul Thorman lifted the Most Points trophy and Peter Fox, another player who has now joined Wakefield, took the Most Tries award for the second successive season.

Lee Lingard was awarded the Best Try gong for his effort in the home league match against Hull KR.

The Clubperson of the Year award went to Alfie Brown (pictured inset below), the match-day volunteer coordinator who offers his time for nothing.

The Press Player of the Year award was decided on 'countback' after Rhodes' excellent end to the season following his return from a hernia operation saw him draw level with longtime leader Golden at the top of the standings.

This competition sees three points awarded for being the Press's man of the match in each game, with two given to who we deem to be the second-best player on the day and one for the thirdbest. Three bonus points are also given to each Player of the Month, which is voted for by Press readers.

Golden, the Player of the Month in March and April, and Rhodes, the August winner, both finished with 22 points.

The award would then be decided on who wins most man-of-thematch awards, but again they were tied, on three apiece.

The winner, therefore, came down to who had the best average mark (out of ten) in the Press's aftermatch player ratings throughout the season - and Rhodes came out on top with 7.4 compared to Golden's 7.13.

Rhodes thus picked up the trophy at last night's ceremony and collected £400 from competition sponsor Collier Plant Hire.

Golden took the runners-up cash prize of £150, to go with his club Player of the Year gong, while Aussie forward Dave Buckley finished third in the standings in his first season in England and collected £50, again courtesy of Colliers. Buckley will also be with York next year.

Rising star Lee Mapals took the last three points of the season for his man of the match effort against Leigh, while the other points that day went to Joe Helme (2) and Jamaine Wray (1).

Meanwhile, Collier Plant Hire is to continue its sponsorship deal with the Knights. This agreement will see Collier continue as a shirt sponsor for the 2007 season.
