DAVE WOODS warned his York City Knights players there would be some “floggings” in training this week as punishment for their woeful defeat to Toulouse.

The Knights went into the game on a high after two consecutive Co-operative Championship wins and a best display of the season last time out, against Batley.

But they lost 46-32 to a side who propped up the table and were thrashed 90-10 by Featherstone a week earlier, and the result left them back in the relegation mire.

They have a week off now – next weekend sees the final of the Northern Rail Cup – before taking on Halifax, but Woods said his charges would not be allowed to take it easy.

“There’s going to be quite a few floggings,” said the Aussie, pictured, who gave his team a five-minute dressing down on the pitch after the game before holding an impromptu meeting of coaching staff as the players trooped off. “What they displayed was not anywhere near good enough. Tomorrow night (at training) is going to be a pretty tough session.”

Asked about the performance, Woods said: “Everyone saw it – it was just disgraceful, back to (the form of) eight weeks ago.

“Our defence was abysmal. There was no commitment from anyone out there. I’ve got no excuses. We were just poor. We didn’t turn up.”

The Knights had been told that Toulouse posed a threat and could not be taken lightly despite their indifferent form. But Woods said those warnings both before the game and at half-time, when York led 24-12, fell on deaf ears.

“Blokes are reading their own press and were thinking they just had to turn up to win and that’s not the case,” he said.

“We tried to tell them that. We said at half-time the first 20 minutes of the second half would be a real dogfight and we needed to match them, but we didn’t do that. It was a very ordinary display.”

Toulouse had been aided at times by controversial refereeing calls from Ronnie Laughton and Woods was clearly unhappy with the Barnsley official’s display.

“Are you trying to get me fined?” he said when asked of Laughton’s performance.

“Everyone saw the display. There’s a reason why he’s in the Championship not Super League, and I don’t think this level is right for him.

“A touch judge calls a Toulouse try forward but he (Laughton) said he was in line with it – so why have touch judges?

“We score a try and the touch judge says it’s fine but he calls us back for a forward pass.

“Offsides we copped, head shots we copped, yet he’s pulling us up for little things.

“He’s a law unto himself but no doubt he will get a good game next week.

“But that’s not the reason why we lost.

“We lost because we did not commit to the game.

“He’s contributed to it but we weren’t good enough on the day.”
