YORK City Knights must see off Workington Town in Championship One tomorrow if they are to be considered true contenders for promotion.

Player coach Paul March reckons his developing side have to win in difficult places like Cumbria to establish themselves as a true force in the division.

The Knights travel to the Derwent Park Stadium having not played since battering Rochdale 44-14 at Huntington Stadium on Easter Monday.

March admits he would have liked to see his Knights in action again sooner, following that spectacular return to form, but believes the lay-off has also helped some of his squad recover from niggling knocks and bruises.

Danny Ratcliffe and Richard Knight will have late fitness tests ahead of a clash March believes is a “massive game” for the club.

“If we want to be contenders in this league, we need to go to places like Workington and pick up the points and show everyone what we are all about,” March said.

“This game is a chance to put a platform down. Every game is a springboard but we need to be pressing and consistent in what we do.

“It all came together against Rochdale, we need to keep it going.

“It is going to be a difficult game in Cumbria. We hit a bit of form before this week off and it might have come at a bad time, but we have been working hard in training and we are looking forward to getting back on the park.”

March admitted he, and director of rugby James Ratcliffe, now have a “bit of a headache” when it comes to selecting the matchday squad but believes it is a great position to be in.

“Everyone is fresh and raring to go,” he added. “We go there full of confidence that we are going to give a good account.”

Meanwhile, March said an offer for forward Dean Andrews, who has been on trial at Huntington Stadium, is “on the table”.

“He has done well for us but nothing has been decided. He has got other clubs interested in him now and the ball is in his court. If he wants to join the Knights we will welcome him with open arms,” he said.
