YORK City Knights will have a new-look line-up for Sunday's Coral Challenge Cup tie at Barrow Raiders.

Boss James Ford could change as many as seven players for the fourth-round trip to Cumbria, with several of the team's stellar names left out of the 19-man squad and fringe players brought in.

Ford insisted the omissions were injury related and that the club remained determined to reach the fifth round and "create more cup memories".

Young Kevin Brown will make his competitive debut for the club at full-back, second-row Mike Kelly will likewise play for the first time this season, and there could be a new untried half-back partnership of (full-back) Matty Marsh and (hooker) Will Jubb, with scrum-half Connor Robinson in the 19 but facing a late fitness test and stand-off Ben Cockayne left out completely.

Packmen Dave Petersen and Marcus Stock are also recalled to York's 17, having both played on dual-reg for Coventry Bears last week, Petersen scoring a late consolation in a 44-10 defeat to Hunslet. Petersen could be used as interchange hooker, assuming Robinson does not play and Jubb switches to stand-off.

New loan recruit Nick Rawsthorne will start at centre - parent club Toronto are not in the Challenge Cup and are thus unconcerned by him being cup-tied - while Halifax are also allowing winger Conor McGrath to play, but fellow loanee Joe Batchelor misses out, St Helens not wanting him to feature.

Winger Judah Mazive and back-row Josh Jordan-Roberts are recalled.

Star men Liam Salter, Graeme Horne and Ronan Dixon, as well as Cockayne and Batchelor, are definitely out (along with the already crocked Ash Robson, Harry Carter and Jason Bass), and in-form prop Jack Teanby, like goalkicker Robinson, is another facing a late fitness test.

Questions will be asked of York fielding an apparently weakened team for the cup, but Ford said: "To suggest that is disrespectful to the players in the side.

"They're York City Knights players and I expect them to play to York City Knights standards. They will be keen to do that too.

"It's a different side to what we've been going with but it's an exciting opportunity to look at some other players in our squad.

"They've got a fantastic opportunity to go to Barrow and show me or remind me how good they are, and to keep the shirt.

"We don't know how long those other boys could be missing - it could be a week, it could be a month - and I want these players to grasp the opportunity."

On the omissions, Ford explained: "We brought Liam back from a hamstring strain quite early but there has been some symptoms around that and he needs a week off. It's right that he doesn't play especially with the quality of players we have available.

"Ben, Ronan and Graeme are carrying niggling injuries - Ben has been doing for a couple of weeks and has probably played a couple of games he possibly shouldn't have done. They need time to recover.

"We're waiting to see if Connor and Jack pass fitness tests.

"With Joe Batchelor, we spoke to St Helens about him playing but they didn't want him to be cup-tied and I understand that.

"St Helens are one of the clubs with a genuine chance of being in the Challenge Cup final, and if Joe gets the opportunity to play in that we would be made up for him."

The fleet-footed Brown, 20, arrived at York as a winger but has played at full-back in St Helens' Academy and in the England youth set-up.

Ford said: "He's got some pedigree. He reminds me of a young Ash Robson with how he is at training. He's very quick with great feet and I'm looking forward to seeing how he performs."

On Kelly's 2019 bow, he added: "Kells has played Championship rugby before and he was good for us last season in the role he had. He's been unlucky to pick up minor injuries but it was his first year for a while without any major injuries. He does some really good things in training and I'm looking forward to seeing him out there."

He added: "What side I go with doesn't bother me. It's winning or losing that bothers me."

On the possibility of reaching a potential money-spinning tie later down the line, Ford said: "The Challenge Cup is a fantastic competition that we want to do as well as we can in.

"We've had some fantastic occasions. Catalans Dragons at home last year - I'm sure the players will remember that game for a long time - and we did okay over at St Helens not too long ago.

"We've had some good cup runs and we're looking forward to being in it again. We'll do our best to progress."

Struggling Barrow, beaten 33-26 at home by the previously winless Swinton in the Championship last week, have recently had about a dozen senior players sidelined.

Joining the injury list week were PNG ace Stargroth Amean, Aussie back-row Jarred Stack and former Hull KR prop - and dual-reg York player - Jordan Walne.

However, pacy full-back Tee Ritson is back early from a knee problem, winger Brett Carter is fit and pushing for a recall, and prop Tom Walker and winger Jake Spedding are hopeful of passing fitness tests. The Toal brothers, Shane and Dan, also returned from long absences last week.
