Man of the match: Connor Robinson – the half-back kicked well and organised the team well and, while one sloppy kick gave Leigh a seven-tackle set near the end, he came up with the all-important match-winning drop-goal against the run of play and a charge-down too on one of Martyn Ridyard’s attempted equalisers.

Referee: James Child (Wakefield) – couple of big calls but he marshalled the game well.

Penalty count: 6-7

Half-time: 6-6

Weather: greasy wet with rain throughout.

Attendance: 2,020.

Moment of the match: Joe Batchelor’s early try suggested there would be plenty of points but that was far from the case, with the biggest moments thereafter coming at the end with Connor Robinson’s drop-goal winner and the four even later shots at goal from Leigh that missed the target.

Gaffe of the match: the wet conditions made life hard but a flurry of errors in the second-half from York invited pressure and made fans bite nails even more.

Gamebreaker: The final hooter.

Match rating: there was only one try apiece but this was truly gripping stuff, summed up by the long and loud ovation at the end. Both teams deserve credit. These really are heady times for York.
