YORK City under-19's secured their position in the FA Youth Cup third qualifying round with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Workington AFC.

Two goals from Alex Glynn in the first-half was cushioned by a Harry Burland strike, seeing City advance to the next stage of the competition, which also sees the Youth Team extend their unbeaten start to the new season.

It didn't take long for the youngsters to establish themselves in the cup clash, with a low cross from Burland being met by Glynn from close-range, who handed the Minstermen a 15th minute lead at Garforth Town's Bannister Prentice Stadium.

Not long later Burland was causing problems again, making a mazy run down the left-hand side before breaking his way into the penalty area before being fouled by the Workington right back, but the referee controversially waived away the penalty appeal as the visitors were able to clear their lines.

Chances came for the hosts as they looked to double their lead as Harley Dawson sent a low effort narrowly wide of goal from distance on the half-hour mark, before fellow midfielder Alex Payne tested Workington goalkeeper Suproto Mansur with a fierce strike which was bravely parried away.

Workington were hanging on, but couldn't deny Glynn his second of the evening with a similar effort as his opener.

Burland's low cross was again latched onto by Glynn, with the winger turning the ball home from close-range with just ten minutes until the half-time whistle.

Glynn thought he’d scored his hat-trick with a tap-in only a minute later, but his effort was ruled out for offside.

Workington’s only real chance of the evening came four minutes into the second-half with midfielder Lewis Moore firing well wide of the target after uncovering space in the middle of the park.

Heading into the second half, striker Alex Hernandez nearly extended the Minstermen’s lead further with a low effort that was palmed into the path of Payne, but the forward could only head the ball narrowly wide.

Burland added the third goal of the evening for the Minstermen with the clock running down, capitalising on a loose ball at the back post and showing his composure, flicking the ball past Mansur to secure a sure victory for York.

The Young Minstermen held on for the win, which sees them move into the third qualifying round of this season’s competition with the draw set to take place this week.

Manager Tim Ryan was pleased with the result, telling the club media team: "It was an okay performance, it was a certain performance where we had to dig in at times.

"The conditions were blustery and the pitch was hard work, to get a comfortable passing game going.

"Credit to Workington, they came and made it a tough challenge for us.

"It's the start of a cup journey where we will go through tough times, today was an obstacle and we've got through it so I am really chuffed for them."

City's academy now return to the under-19's league action next week when they face a trip to the Midlands to take on Solihull Moors next Wednesday, October 11.
