YORK City under-19's celebrated silverware on Wednesday afternoon, after winning the National League Academy Cup at England's St George's Park.

A second-half strike from Kieran Clayton secured victory for the young York side, after overcoming the challenge of Woking.

Tim Ryan's side are now unbeaten in their last 13 games and have been rewarded with their efforts, after previously defeating Altrincham, Blyth Spartans, Chester and Notts County in the semi-finals.

The final was played at St George's Park, otherwise known as where England train for their international matches, which will have been added incentive for the academy.

Ryan named nine changes to the side that came from behind to defeat Chestefield 4-2 just five days ago, with Jacob Bulmer, Jacob McLoughlin, Jonny Haase, Tom Algar, Ben Dale, George Harrison, Alex Payne, Alex Hernandez and Jonny Shepherd all being reinstated into the starting eleven.

The alterations to the squad nearly made an immediate impact, as former Tadcaster Albion loanee Shepherd saw an effort blocked before Harrison was disposessed with a crunching tackle to deny an opening opportunity.

Woking had impressed to earn their right in the final, and nearly took an early lead as Alfie Burton drove an effort narrowly wide.

Hernandez has been in form all season for the academy, but was left feeling frustrated by Owen Crawford as the Woking goalkeeper made a low stop after Hernandez raced through on goal.

Burton again caused problems for the City backline, scooping an effort over the bar from a narrow angle.

Heading into the second half, the scores were level, but Ryan's side entered the field with urgency.

Haase's deep free-kick evaded the Woking defence and came close to being met by Hernandez, but the young striker couldn't connect with the ball from close-range.

Another dangerous Haase cross caused problems, but this time Clayton was unable to convert at the near post.

And with York's prevailing pressure, the young Minstermen finally found their deserved breakthrough.

A brilliant cross into the box from Harrison saw Clayton latch onto the chance, before steering the ball into the bottom corner to gift York the lead.

Shepherd came close to doubling the score when cutting inside of a Woking defender, before curling a fantastic effort towards the far post that was brilliantly parried over by Crawford.

York defended their lead valiantly, even scoring another goal themselves through Hernandez, only for his effort to be ruled offside.

But after a fantastic gritted performance from Ryan's side, Woking were unable to mount a comeback, seeing York under-19s secure silverware and continue an incredible season.

It's backk to league action up next for York, who host Altrincham in seven days time.
