GOALS by Nathan Dyer, Matt Grimes and Marvin Emnes saw York City go down 3-0 to Premier League Swansea in the Capital One Cup.

The impressive Swans might also have won by a bigger margin had it not been for a string of impressive saves by City star man Scott Flinders.

But the Minstermen were far from embarrassed at the Liberty Stadium and rallied well after Dyer’s second-minute opener for the hosts with James Berrett hitting the crossbar and Vadaine Oliver going close with two chances.

A luckily, deflected second-half strike by Grimes, however, killed the tie off before substitute Emnes completed the scoring on 88 minutes.

Wilcox made three changes to the side that started Saturday’s 0-0 draw at Exeter.

Reece Thompson, Femi Ilesanmi and Eddie Nolan were all included in the first XI with Jake Hyde, David Tutonda and the injured Stephane Zubar dropping out.

Swansea, who did not field anybody who kicked off against Sunderland at the weekend, still began with £21million worth of talent on the field.

Despite employing a 5-5-0 formation when Swansea had the ball, the visitors fell behind with just one minute and 24 seconds on the clock.

City keeper Flinders did well to charge off his line and thwart Portugal international Eder but, when the rebound broke to Dyer, he rolled the ball into an inviting net from ten yards.

Eder went on to stab wide from three yards under pressure from Marvin McCoy after a rapid raid down the right by Dyer.

At the other end, City skipper Russell Penn’s 15-yard stooping header called Sweden international Kristoffer Nordfeldt into his first save of the night on seven minutes.

Flinders went on to make fine saves to deny Wayne Routledge and South Korean international Ki Sung-Yeung.

Swans centre-back Kyle Bartley also volleyed over from a Sung-Yeung corner before City began to settle a little.

On 20 minutes, Berrett’s goalbound shot was blocked by Jordi Amat after a strong burst down the left by Ilesanmi.

Oliver then saw his header from Luke Summerfield’s corner tipped over by Nordfeldt before the visitors hit the crossbar when Berrett’s 15-yard strike deflected off Amat.

After Grimes shot wide with Flinders’ goal at his mercy following Eder’s unselfish square pass, Berrett also saw a 20-yard attempt saved by Nordfeldt.

Eder had four chances, however, to extend the hosts’ lead before the break.

His first was deflected off target by Dave Winfield, the second saw him head wide from Grimes’ corner, the third saw Flinders make a fantastic, far-post save after a left-wing cross from the same player and the fourth, following a terrific piece of skill to fashion the chance for himself inside the away penalty box, lacked the pace to trouble the Minstermen’s busy keeper.

After the break, Grimes fired over from the edge of the box after intercepting Berrett’s pass to Penn before Oliver curled a ten-yard effort inches over for City.

Bartley went on to head off target after a Routledge cross and Eder also flashed a shot wide of Flinders’ near post from an unfavourable angle before Grimes doubled the Swans’ lead in fortunate circumstances.

The former Exeter midfielder tried his luck from 20 yards out and his shot took a heavy deflection in the City penalty box to beat a helpless Flinders.

Emnes went on to add a third at the death, riding a Lowe challenge before firing past an exposed Flinders.
