GARY Martin has left York City after the club discovered he was playing Sunday morning football for a club in the Darlington Invitation League.
The Press have learned that the 27-year-old striker has been turning out for Darlington Albion while playing for the Minstermen on a non-contract basis in National League North and the FA Trophy since the start of November.
Martin is filling time before he joins Norwegian outfit Lillestrom at the turn of the year after being released by Belgian side Lokeren and City are understood to have been alerted after he played in Albion’s Durham FA County Cup clash against Sedgefield St Edmonds on Sunday.
The day before he had scored his first goal in four outings for the Minstermen during the 3-1 Trophy triumph over Coalville Town at Bootham Crescent, but City chief Martin Gray has acted quickly to part company with the former Middlesbrough reserve, although the club would only confirm that his departure was prompted by a “disciplinary issue”.
As Darlington manager, Gray took the same action when Marc Ellison was found to be playing Sunday morning football, as well as for the part-time, north-east club, who were plying their trade in the Northern League at the time.
