Selby Rugby Union Club continued their 100 per cent start to the Yorkshire 2 campaign with a hard fought 22-12 win over local rivals Knottingley in the first meeting since the inauguration of the leagues in 1987.

The home side pressurised from the off and a rolling maul forced the opposition to capitulate, hooker Shane Sellars emerging from the debris to claim the touchdown.

That, however, proved to be the highlight of Selby's first half as the Knottingley forwards began to dominate possession, though they missed three gilt-edged penalties.

Knottingley full-back Paul Sutcliffe bullocked his way over from the back of a ruck and converted his own score to give the Glassworkers a deserved half-time lead.

After the interval, Selby's forwards found their power to provide possession at last for the backs.

The forwards retained the ball through three phases enabling Shaun Austerfield to cross in the corner, Dan Porter narrowly failing to convert.

Wright Phillips then collected the ball at the back of a ruck before feeding Austerfield for his second of the day.

A lapse in concentration let in Mick Ash to score, but then Porter's form returned for his intelligent kicking to constantly turn the visitors. Porter kicked ahead and won the race for the ball scorching over the long grass of the outfield.

The game ended with the Selby defence holding out to fend off strong Knottingley pressure.

Next week Selby are at Leos in Leeds, who are also unbeaten in League action and all that is needed is a little more consistency over the full 80 minutes.
