York RUFC were a little grateful to beat Bridlington 32-19 in Yorkshire One and maintain their unbeaten start.

They should have won easily after surging ahead but almost lost after wobbling in the face of the visitors' comeback.

York were in total control in the opening quarter, with skipper Carl Paterson's kicks keeping play in Brid's half.

A Paterson penalty, after a burst from centre Rob Taylor, put them ahead and the stand-off followed up with a try, dummying over following a lineout.

Then scrum-half James Arkle broke blind from his ten-metre line and fed winger Billy Cakaunitabua, who made good ground, after which the ball was switched to the opposite wing where full-back Neil McClure's sped over, Paterson converting.

More pressure saw Sam Arkle cross, but the referee had blown prematurely to award York a penalty for a head high tackle which resulted in a yellow card for Brid forward Lee Warley.

Nevertheless, York tapped the penalty and, following several scrums and a warning to Brid from the referee, York number eight Ian Davies forced his way over from a scrum, Paterson converting.

At 22-0 up, York lost concentration. They lost the ball trying to run it out of their own 22 and again at the base of their own scrum, Brid wing Gary Stevens scored a try.

Brid continued to exert pressure either side of half-time and scored twice more through winger Gary Wiles and hooker Jon Lee, Jamie Murie converting both.

Murie was directing play, kicking for position and orchestrating attacks but, just when York's defence looked about to crack, a Brid pass went to ground five yards from the try-line, where York full-back Neil McClure hacked on, picked up on half-way and just beat the cover to the corner.

Paterson converted and York could breathe again, with a further penalty making the game safe.
