FIRST-HALF power enabled York Rugby Union Club to surge to a comfortable 19-12 Yorkshire One conquest of visitors Bridlington.

The Clifton Parkers had much the better of an entertaining first half and built up a 19-0 interval lead through tries from Charlie Nicholson, Jack Maud and Matt Green, supplemented by two Karl Birch conversions.

The second half was interrupted for 15 minutes by a neck injury to Green who was taken to hospital by ambulance.

The visitors seemed less affected by the stoppage and opened their account with a try and conversion after a terrible mix-up at the base of a York scrum. Matters worsened for York when Darren Rutherford was sent off for a second yellow card but Bridlington also had a man yellow-carded for a late tackle.

Brid grabbed a second try as both sides sought to play open rugby but York hit back strongly and were twice unlucky not to add to their score as the visitors tired.

It was a gritty York performance in which both Maud brothers played a full part but the injuries to Green and Birch are worrying for tomorrow’s Yorkshire Shield semi-final.

By far the biggest crowd of the season witnessed an eight-try bonanza at The Gannock as the Yorkshire One champions-elect avenged their sole defeat of the season to Keighley by beating them 35-25.

Teei Piawi slotted home an early penalty attempt before Andy Mitchell bagged the first try, Piawi converting. He soon fired over another penalty and the hosts were cruising.

But Keighley rallied to cross and when home centre Ryan Lonsdale was sin-binned for a high tackle the Malton lead was down to 13-5 by the interval.

Keighley took advantage of their numbers to edge within a point but the returning Lonsdale fed Mark Bradshaw to cross with Piawi again obliging.

Piawi then carved his way through for a try, which he duly converted, before teeing up Josh Saunders to cross the whitewash.

Malton added another score through a Piawi penalty to secure the win that leaves them needing a point from next week’s game at Ilkley to seal promotion.

Selby lost 36-24 at home to Dinnington, while York RI were beaten 42-12 at Baildon in Yorkshire Three. Nestlé Rowntree fell 63-3 at Stocksbridge in Yorkshire Five.
