Malton & NORTON RUFC reckon they need seven points from their final three games to be crowned Yorkshire One champions.

The Gannock-based outfit want to finish their home campaign in style tomorrow by gaining revenge on Keighley – the only side to beat them in the league this season.

Having overcome an inconsistent display to see off Dinnington 36-19 last time out and record their 20th victory of the campaign, Malton will take a giant step towards North One East with victory tomorrow.

Keighley held on 13-12 when the two sides met in West Yorkshire but, while they have been imperious at home, they have not been so strong on their travels.

Malt spokesman Bill Laidler said: “If we win on Saturday, and Sheffield lose, that’s it, but we are going on the basis we need another seven points. In terms of results, it has probably been our best-ever season and there will be a big crowd on Saturday.

“Keighley always bring a few and it was very close when we played there. Conditions were terrible and it was barely playable. We have had a few players return since then and we are much as we were last week. We are just about full strength and should be stronger than last time.”

Derby honours went York’s way with a 20-18 victory over Selby and they have more local pride to fight for when they entertain Bridlington.

Arran Thompson returns at scrum-half for Sean Bass’s men and renews his partnership with Karl Birch in the half-backs. Jack Maud is on the wing, with Mike Cawthorn and Sam Arkle the centre combination.

Simon Humphries leads the front row, with Stu Davies and Matt Green adding beef to the back row.

Pocklington go to Moortown in Yorkshire Two in a rescheduled game that originally fell foul of the snow back in December.

Pock again have a lengthy list of players with minor injuries, and training on Tuesday was restricted to watching the match video and a swimming session. They were joined by Matt Davies, who came out of hospital earlier in the day after ankle surgery.

Pock have selected a squad of 22, but definitely back in contention is teenage lock Tom Peters, who has recovered from a hand problem.

Selby look to get over their narrow defeat to York with victory over Dinnington at Sandhill Lane, while York RI are at Baildon in Yorkshire Three and Nestlé Rowntree go to Stocksbridge in Yorkshire Five.
