IN-FORM Malton and Norton RUFC sent shockwaves through Yorkshire One with a stunning 23-19 victory over leaders Wheatley Hills.

The relegation-threatened Ryedale side have now pulled off four successive victories, with the most impressive being Saturday’s triumph over Hills at The Gannock.

The reverse fixture earlier in the season saw Malton suffer a 63-3 hammering, but they came up trumps this time.

Malton were first out of the traps and tore into the visitors with a series of drives into the 22-metre area.

Centre Ryan Lonsdale caused havoc before fly-half Chris Creber forced his way over for a first-minute try.

Wheatley were then penalised for not releasing a tackled player and Teei Piawi kicked the penalty.

Both sides had a player sin-binned and shortly afterwards Wheatley claimed a converted try.

Piawi struck a second penalty from 40 metres out to extend the Malton lead, while the visitors missed a simple opportunity of their own.

Wheatley kept up the pressure on the Malton line and, after a series of drives, scored a converted try for a 14-11 interval lead.

Early in the second half, Creber made a initial break before handing on to Lonsdale, who crossed in the corner and Piawi added the extras.

On the hour, Duncan Foster won good lineout ball and fed Paul Dobson, who crashed over for a try.

With ten minutes remaining, Wheatley forced their way into Malton 22 and bagged a try, but the home side managed to hang on for a superb victory.

Malton’s victory overshadowed York’s excellent 37-30 derby victory over Selby at Sandhill Lane.

The Swans led 21-0 after 15 minutes, but York hit back with a try by Alex Nixon and a Paul Williams conversion and penalty to make it 24-10 at half-time.

York’s Richard Downey capped a superb performance with a try after the break, before Joe Maud and Billy Cakaunitabua also crossed. Williams converted all three tries and kicked two further penalties to seal an impressive comeback from the visitors.

Yorkshire Four leaders York RI got the better of visitors Old Grovians, winning a tough battle 27-20.

RI conceded an early try before Joe Thornton kicked two penalties.

Thornton then swapped penalties with his opposite number before Grovians crossed again for a 13-9 half-time lead.

Robin Grice broke clear and fed Paul Guest for a try converted by Thornton, but Grovians regained the lead with a converted try.

Thornton reduced the arrears to a point with a penalty and, with five minutes remaining, Grice rounded off a flowing move to snatch victory. Thornton’s fifth penalty rounded off the scoring.

Meanwhile, lacklustre Pocklington were beaten 14-0 at home by Moortown in Yorkshire Two. Pock lost hooker Andy Wilson and scrum-half Ben Rees with knee injuries.
