SERIOUS injuries were heaped upon derby day insult for York RUFC as they crashed 27-3 to Selby in Yorkshire One at Sandhill Lane.

The visitors were already reeling from the late withdrawal of scrum-half Graeme Smith and centre Nic Ventress, but things got worse as Stu Davies was forced off with concussion and 19-year-old forward Chris Fox suffered a broken leg.

The key to the Swans’ victory was an excellent front-five display by Paul Gable, Paul Randell, Andy Pocklington, Kev Weston and Mark Toye as they dominated the game.

Paul Williams put York 3-0 in front with a penalty, but Selby’s Chris Quinn then seized on an Alex Nixon error to send winger Ben Lunt over for the first try.

A penalty try, converted by Quinn, late in the first half gave the home side a 12-3 interval lead.

Shortly after Davies was injured, York winger Rob Kama was shown a yellow card and Selby capitalised to score three further tries, from scrum-half Matthew Smith, Toye and Quinn.

Malton & Norton maintained their revival with a 47-10 victory over basement side Glossop at The Gannock.

The Ryedale side made the breakthrough after five minutes when Ian Cooke streaked clear before sending Nathan Reid in for a try under the posts. Cooke converted.

On 11 minutes, Malton were awarded a penalty under the posts and Reid took it quickly, exchanged passes with a team-mate and drove over the line. Cooke again converted. Fly-half Bill McCrone then broke on halfway and opened the way for number eight Simon Badgery to battle through several tackles before sending in centre Phil Pateman. Cooke again added the extras.

Glossop reduced the deficit with a penalty to trail 21-3 at half-time.

With 47 minutes on the clock, Reid was sin-binned but Malton ran in two tries in his absence.

A strong forward drive in the visitors’ 22 metre area gave Stephen Scoles the opportunity to break away and score, with Cooke converting.

Five minutes later Malton’s good lineout ball was transferred to the backs and winger Elliott Richardson crossed in the corner. Glossop scored a converted try, but the hosts hit back with a try from 20-year-old debutant Jamie Rounthwaite. Good handling by Rounthwaite then created a try for Dave Gardner, converted by Cooke.

Meanwhile, Pocklington were beaten 32-14 away to Yorkshire Two leaders Wheatley Hills.

Pocklington took the lead in the 17th minute when the forwards counter-attacked from their own 22 to set up a try for winger Nathan Prosser. Nick Bennett converted. They doubled their lead on the half hour when fly-half Alex Lucas charged down his opposite number and kicked on for centre Jack Holbrough to get the touchdown, Bennett again converting.

Pocklington were pressing for a third score at the end of the first half, but Wheatley Hills broke the length of the field in injury time to make it 14-5 at the break.

Wheatley Hills scored a converted try to close the gap to two points and then they went ahead.

Bennett was wide with a penalty attempt to level the scores, before Wheatley Hills pulled away with three late tries.

A powerful forward display earned York RI a 12-3 win over Rotherham Phoenix in Yorkshire Four at New Lane.

RI went in front on 15 minutes when, after a storming break by Will Gibson, Tom Naylor crossed in the corner. They increased that on the half hour mark when fly-half Robin Grice scored under the posts and Michael Land converted for a 12-0 half-time lead.

The second half was a more even contest, with a Phoenix penalty providing the only score.
