INTERNATIONAL honours are on the cards for Pocklington’s most famous mini-rugby union export.

Rob Webber is in the England Saxons match squad to face Portugal at Sale’s Edgeley Park ground in Stockport tonight (kick-off 8pm).

The 22-year-old forward, who has established himself this season as first choice hooker at Guinness Premiership giants London Wasps, has been tipped to gain full internationals caps in the near future.

The Saxons are England’s second team and is the latest career step for Webber, who has previously represented his country at Under-16s, U18s, U19s and U21s levels, while also representing the senior England sevens outfit.

Webber was included in the Saxons’ party which toured Canada in the summer, but did not step onto the pitch. But as one of two hookers in a squad of 21 taking on the Portuguese tonight, he is almost certain to make his debut.

He has been one of the highlights of what has been a poor season for Wasps – the club are currently lounging in ninth place in the Premiership table and out of the Heineken Cup.

A York City supporter, Webber first made his impact in the oval ball game when he helped Pocklington to the Yorkshire Championships before joining Leeds.

Webber, who can also play in the back row, has stepped into the hooker berth after former French captain Raphael Ibanez hung up his boots in the summer.

He had to wait two years before getting his first start at Adams Park but then played a pivotal role in a 28-14 win over London Irish on his debut in October 2007.

Meanwhile, the next generation of rising stars at Pocklington’s Percy Road are making their presence felt. Front-row John Aikman has been involved with Yorkshire U20s as they played a series of warm up games in the run-up to the RFU National U20s Championship.

And, on Sunday, a quartet of players are lined up to make their Yorkshire U17s debuts.

Richard Skowronek, Tom Peters, Alex Webster and James Wilkinson are in the Yorkshire squad which meets Eastern Counties at Cambridge.
