YORK RUFC are one game away from Twickenham – but coach Lee Denham is keeping a cool head about it.

The Yorkshire One leaders and northern champions travel to their Midlands Two West (South) counterparts Droitwich tomorrow in the semi-final of the RFU Intermediate Cup.

Despite tomorrow’s hosts having a formidable record to match York’s, Denham seems confident his side are capable of turning in a worthy performance, but he cannot say if it will be enough against a team about whom little is known.

Both sides enjoyed big victories last Saturday, with Jon Dawes and Shane Goulding each crossing twice to help York see off Bradford Salem 43-13 at Clifton Park, while Droitwich won their 18th game of 18 with a 46-13 triumph over Leamington.

The Worcestershire side, who were losing finalists last season, have earned 16 try bonus points this campaign, while their 19-7 win at Whitchurch in the quarter-final was the only time they have notched fewer than 25 points since the turn of the year.

Denham said: “They might even be doing better than us – they’ve got a 100 per cent record. They’re very much of an unknown though.

“Hopefully we’ll give everything we can, and if we can go to Twickenham that’ll be great.

“But we’ve got to win first. There’s no point getting ahead of ourselves.

“Against Bradford Salem, we started really well then dipped badly.

“We weren’t playing poor rugby, it was that we were trying to find the whitewash too often. We were forcing passes and struggled to find our feet in the game.

“Second half we were absolutely fantastic, we played good rugby and had good command of the ball.

“On Saturday, we’re not going to be doing anything different from what we normally do. If they’re better than us, they’ll win. But if we are, we will.

“If we play our game, score tries, keep control of the ball and play our phases, we can win.”

North Yorkshire neighbours Selby are still struggling towards the lower end of the table, two points clear of the drop zone but seven below the next team up, Bradford Salem.

A win over bottom side Wheatley Hills a fortnight ago lifted them away from danger, while the only consolation from last Saturday’s 57-7 loss at Middlesbrough was that 13th-placed North Ribblesdale suffered a similarly crushing 59-5 home defeat to Heath.

Selby do not have a fixture until Saturday, April 7.

Pocklington have to gain 14 points from their final four games to be in with a chance of avoiding the drop from North Premier.

The run begins tomorrow at third-placed Harrogate whose only league defeat of 2018 came at leaders Preston Grasshoppers two weeks ago.

Malton & Norton are 12 points clear of the North One East red zone despite suffering two consecutive defeats, including last week’s 40-19 loss at seventh-placed Cleckheaton.

The Gannock outfit have no fixture tomorrow.

York RI dropped to second bottom in Yorkshire Four Shield after a 29-15 home loss to Bramley Phoenix last week. There are no games in the division tomorrow.
