YORK RUFC were dumped out of the Yorkshire Shield by Bridlington.

The two clubs are currently fighting it out for promotion in Yorkshire One and, only five weeks ago, York inflicted a shock defeat on their rivals at Clifton Park.

But there was nothing shocking about Saturday’s quarter-final on the Yorkshire coast as favourites Bridlington ran out comfortable 43-7 winners.

York had Liam Hessay at fly half and Neil McClure at full back. In the forwards, Josh Parker played at open-side flanker with Daz Rutherford while Russ Bowers and James Hartley were in the front row.

York started the game with a spell of possession but the Bridlington defence offered no gaps.

The home side then took command after Gary Stevens ran onto a kick from Matiu Welch to score the game’s opening try.

Welch added a second try after intercepting a York pass and, this time, the conversion was good. 12-0.

With York finding progression difficult, Bridlington had possession in the York twenty-two. Welch put in another kick behind the York defence and George Davies did well to clear the ball.

York were scrapping hard against a well-organised Bridlington attack but were unable to stop Bridlington prop Paddy Waines from crashing over after another fantastic short ball from Welch. The conversion was good. 19-0.

Bridlington scored again soon after and the writing was on the wall for York.

Rutherford made ground going forward but a loose pass was picked up by Bridlington allowing Gareth Roberts to score. The conversion was good and it was 26-0 with five minutes still to play in the first half.

Bridlington were relieving any York pressure with wind-assisted clearances and Gareth Stevens scored a fifth try for Bridlington before the break. The conversion was good and it was 33-0 at half time.

York spent the first ten minutes of the second half within ten metres of the Bridlington try-line but were still unable to score.

Marc Benson came closest but was held-up over the line. Just as Bridlington cleared their line, Chris Fox intercepted a pass and ran in to score York’s only try of the game. Neil McClure converted. 33-7.

Martin Robinson scored two more tries for Bridlington in the final twenty minutes to underline the home team’s superiority - although both conversions were missed.

York refused to give up and Rutherford put in a good effort to chase down a Bridlington runner and George Davies made an excellent tackle.

York will be looking to bounce back when they entertain Bradford Salem in the league on Saturday.
