POCKLINGTON’S dominant forward line laid the foundations for a comprehensive 38-0 home win over local rivals Driffield in North One East.

Driffield, unsettled by Pocklington’s power in the pack, started with three props in the front row but Pocklington went straight on the attack and were camped on the visitors’ line - squeezing their opponents at a series of close range scrums.

With eight minutes gone, Ben Rees broke from the base and dummied his way over. Jonty Peters converted.

Driffield threatened briefly on the break-away and were off target with an ambitious penalty but Pocklington regained the initiative and Peters banged over a penalty of his own.

Pocklington pinned Driffield back and were only a fingertip away from another score during a scramble from a chip to the corner.

Pocklington held the position and, although Driffield reshuffled their pack and brought on a recognised hooker, the visiting eight were immediately and unceremoniously pushed off their own ball and shunted across their own line for Jack Holbrough to claim a pushover try. Peters again converted.

After the Pock pack thrust up the right, and backs probed on the left, an inside ball saw Holbrough hauled down a foot short and lock Tom Peters diving through the ruck to score. Younger brother Jonty’s third conversion put Pocklington firmly in the driving seat at 24-0.

Pocklington were in no mood to ease up. They attacked in waves and again punished Driffield’s pack at two close range scrummages. The ball was swung wide to the waiting backs and Jack Fletcher rolled over for the bonus point try. Peters converted with a little help help from the post.

Driffield looked bruised and battered and, after Pocklington hacked a dropped ball upfield, they were denied another score when the last pass bobbled forward.

It hardly mattered as they turned the screw at the scrum before Tom Peters flipped inside for Tim Nixon to crash over. Matt Procter took over kicking duties and converted.

Pocklington emptied the bench and pressed again before Driffield managed to break out. To their credit, Driffield threw everything into a late rally but Pocklington’s defence held firm.

Home flanker Johnny Wood was sin-binned for a ruck offence and Driffield eyed a late consolation but Pocklington’s steely performance was summed up in the final minute when fullback Fletcher sprinted across the field to deny a Driffield player with a strong last ditch tackle.

The seven-man home pack comfortably won the resultant scrum, the ball was booted clear, and Pocklington trooped off the field to enjoy the club’s Christmas party in the clubhouse.
