A JOSH CRUISE penalty in the fourth minute of injury time earned Selby RUFC a 6-3 victory over Middlesbrough in Yorkshire One.

The Swans, without five first choice three-quarters, made hard work of beating a workmanlike Middlesbrough at Sandhill Lane, despite dominating possession and territory.

Selby started brightly, with flanker Dominic Bosher retaining possession from the kick-off. Middlesbrough conceded a penalty and full-back Cruise put Selby 3-0 in front.

Two further penalty chances for Selby and one for Middlesbrough were all missed, but visiting full-back Jack Bircham pulled his side level after 38 minutes when Selby were penalised for holding on.

The third quarter belonged to Selby, but again two penalties from Cruise were missed.

The Swans changed the kicker for their third attempt of the half after 63 minutes, but fly-half Cody Whittaker could not improve on his side’s miserable place-kicking record.

Selby should have scored a try after an excellent break from scrum-half Neil Francis. He was clear of the defence but, instead of sprinting to the line, he opted to pass and the ball went to ground.

An ambitious penalty attempt from 51 metres by Cruise after 75 minutes fell well short and wide, and the hosts were then forced to withstand three five-metre scrums.

Four minutes into added on time, Middlesbrough were caught offside and Cruise won it with the last kick of the match.

In-form Malton & Norton produced their best performance of the Yorkshire One campaign to win 38-13 at Wath-on-Dearne.

They made the breakthrough on three minutes when fly-half Nick Daley sent centre Vusumzi Dyantjies over and Zwelakhe Sodladla converted.

Centre Josh Heggie raced over between the posts and Sodladla again added the extras and the home side could only register two penalties before the interval to turn around at 14-6.

Malton opened the second half with a flourish. Number eight Mark Bradshaw broke and handed on to wing Ian Cooke for the third try and Sodladla added the conversion.

Wath responded with a try from a clean catch and drive to make it 21-13, but Malt skipper Sam Triffitt restored the 15-point gap with the bonus point try, again goaled by Sodladla.

Sodladla was sent to the sin-bin but Malt soaked up any Wath pressure and, from a late lineout, substitute John Lumley touched down. Cooke added the extras.

York were unable to repeat the previous week’s Yorkshire Shield heroics against Doncaster Phoenix at Clifton Park as they lost 23-16 in Yorkshire One.

Doncaster opened the scoring from a lineout catch and drive on five minutes, but George Davis kicked a penalty to get York on the scoreboard.

Davis edged York into the lead with a second penalty, but a converted try just before the break gave Doncaster a 12-6 advantage.

Phoenix secured another three points from a penalty after the break, but Toby Atkins beat a number of defenders in a solo run to score an excellent try.

Josh Britland chipped over the advancing Doncaster defensive line and collected his own kick, with Curtis Fletcher on hand to go over for York’s second try to put them 16-15 in front.

A lineout catch and drive led to a try from the league leaders and, having snatched back the lead, they added a late drop goal to seal their tenth win of the campaign.
