A LAST-GASP penalty from Baptiste Briu earned York RI a thrilling 20-19 victory over Halifax Vandals in Yorkshire Four.

RI started at a blistering pace at New Lane and, in the second minute, hooker Fifi Botchway powered over the Vandals line for a fine try. Briu converted.

Halifax pulled back a penalty, but the hosts moved 14-3 in front when Andy Brentnall got the ball in his own 22 and sprinted the length of the field to score under the posts for Briu to add the extras.

On the stroke of half-time, there was a misunderstanding as RI thought the referee called last play. They booted the ball into touch, but there were 30 seconds remaining and Vandals capitalised by taking the lineout and scoring a converted try.

Halifax then added three penalty kicks to RI’s one to move 19-17 in front.

The referee called two minutes to go and RI threw everything at Halifax.

They were awarded a penalty and Briu held his nerve to land the winning kick.
