SELBY RUFC are only two points away from a return to Yorkshire One after edging to a 10-7 victory over Hullensians.

Hullensians threatened to spoil the hosts’ party at Sandhill Lane as they led 7-3 at the break and defended resolutely throughout.

However, the Swans emerged as winners to leave them on the brink of promotion with two Yorkshire Two games remaining, at Doncaster Phoenix this Saturday and at home to Sheffield Medicals a fortnight later.

Hullensians fly-half Clayton McCloud missed two penalty chances in the opening throes of the match, with Selby counterpart Josh Cruise also missing a kick.

The visitors went in front with an excellent try under the posts from winger John Wilson in the 23rd minute. McCloud converted for a 7-0 lead.

Cruise missed a penalty attempt on 27 minutes, while Selby were held up over the line and then penalised on the Hullensians five-metre line for holding on. Three minutes before the break, the hosts put some points on the board with a penalty from Cruise and then Hullensians replacement Neil O’Donnell was yellow-carded.

Selby took the lead for the first time three minutes into the second half. Cruise picked up a loose ball on the Selby 30-metre line and offloaded to Alex Arthur, who fed scrum-half Josh Greenfield and his offload sent centre Alex Webster over under the posts.

Cruise converted, but he later missed a drop goal effort and a penalty kick.

The game was held up for 11 minutes midway through the half as Hullensians second row Adam Atkinson suffered a serious leg break.

The game restarted on the second-team pitch and Selby piled on the pressure, only to be denied by good defence and handling errors.

Hullensians captain Chris Smith was yellow-carded on 82 minutes and the home side managed to see out the game.

Pocklington made it seven wins from their last eight North One East games with a 32-14 victory at home to Middlesbrough.

They blew Boro away in the first period with some high tempo rugby to lead 29-0 at the interval.

Pocklington got on track with two early Nick Bennett penalties, then centre Jack Holbrough pounced on a loose ball for a try that Bennett converted. Number eight Dan Wilson added a solo effort when he picked up from a scrum near halfway and weaved all the way to the corner to touchdown.

Bennett booted the touchline conversion before kicking three more penalties, one of them from inside his own half.

Pock went to sleep in the second half and allowed Boro two converted tries before Bennett sealed it with his sixth penalty.

Kiwi centre Kenton Leiataua scored a hat-trick of tries as a young Malton & Norton side thumped Morpeth 55-8 in their final game of the North One East campaign.

The Ryedale side ran in nine tries in the romp at The Gannock, with youngster James Bulmer adding four conversions and Leiataua one.

The other Malt try-scorers were winger Harry Shepherd, flanker George Harrison, full-back Tom Newitt (2), substitute centre Ali Heard and scrum-half Henry Newitt.

York finished fourth in Yorkshire One after a 45-16 victory over Barnsley at Clifton Park.

In Yorkshire Three, York RI lost 67-0 at third-placed Baildon.
