SELBY RUFC could reignite their Yorkshire Two title hopes if they grab a victory at leaders Doncaster Phoenix tomorrow.

The Sandhill Laners trail their South Yorkshire foes by 13 points but could reduce that to eight with a bonus point win and they still have two games in hand on their table-topping rivals.

Head coach Richard Nicholson’s side were beaten 35-27 at home by Phoenix in the first meeting between the two teams in late November, but the Swans chief believes poor discipline and missed chances contributed to that loss.

“It’s obviously a massive game and week after week it just keeps getting bigger and bigger,” Nicholson said of the game. “This is just the next stepping stone.

“It’s a top of the table clash. We know the quality of our opponents and we are expecting a very tough game.

“We want to get the best team out, try to concentrate on the opponents we play and if that is good enough then great.

“The priority is promotion but the confidence a victory tomorrow would bring, after the momentum we have built up, would be a big plus.

“They are a good group. They work very hard and they get on well off the field. That’s really important when you have got tough games.”

Rob Triffitt will miss the game as a result of the suspected broken nose, concussion, and cuts and bruises he suffered in the Swans’ 52-5 victory over Trafford MV in the quarter-finals of the RFU Senior Vase last weekend.

The second rower was taken to York Hospital after allegedly being repeatedly punched at the bottom of a ruck by Trafford number eight Mark Hodgson.

Nicholson said video footage of the incident had been passed to the citing officer at the Yorkshire Referees’ Society, while Triffitt himself was still thinking about what to do over the incident.

Pocklington face another tough North One East test when they travel to a fourth place Sheffield side who still have hopes of claiming a promotion play-off spot.

Sheffield are traditionally one of Yorkshire’s senior clubs and it is the first time in Pocklington’s history that they have played at Sheffield’s Abbeydale Park.

When the sides met at Percy Road in November, Pocklington suffered an agonising defeat when Sheffield scored in the fifth minute of injury time to steal an 18-14 win.

Pocklington select a squad of 20 and will finalise their line-up after training.

Malton & Norton are still on the hunt for the one victory they feel will guarantee North One East safety – but they will have a tough time getting it at promotion hunting Wheatley Hills.

The Gannock outfit travel there confident they can secure victory against a side that are second in the table but have lost five times this season.

Kiwi Pat Fifita is back from injury and on the bench, but head coach Chris Creber will soon undergo reconstructive knee surgery after exiting the game at Morley several weeks ago and is out for the season.

Club spokesman Bill Laidler said: “Wheatley Hills are an up and down sort of side and our recent games against them have been pretty good. I think it was fairly close at home and we beat them at the end of last season.

“We know what we need to do to get a result against them and we just need to get another win and then safety is sealed.”

Elsewhere, York meet Old Brodlieans at Clifton Park in Yorkshire One, while city neighbours York RI entertain Hessle at New Lane in Yorkshire Three.
