New Earswick All Blacks ARLC maintained their two-point lead at the top of Pennine League division one east with a 20-19 victory over Ackworth Jaguars.

The home side edged a gripping encounter at White Rose Avenue to start 2011 as they finished 2010 – in winning style.

The All Blacks started well with hooker Jack Carling crossing after a loose carry by Ackworth went to ground. The try was converted by stand-off Max Brachen.

Ackworth levelled shortly after, but All Blacks responded with full-back Ben Dent going in for an unconverted try.

The visitors went in front midway through the first half, a converted try putting them 12-10 up at the break.

The hosts regained the advantage when winger Jack Law scored in the corner, Brachen converting.

Ackworth levelled ten minutes later with an unconverted try and nudged ahead with a drop goal and a penalty after 60 minutes.

However, the All Blacks snatched victory thanks to a try by Dent.

All Blacks man of the match was second-rower Joe Hemmings, while there were also solid performances by Dent and centre Chris Spain.

The fourth division game between New Earswick ‘A’ and Ovenden ‘A’ was abandoned after 76 minutes due to a brawl. The All Blacks led 18-16 when the referee called a halt. A disciplinary hearing will determine if the score will stand.

Try-scorers for New Earswick were Carl Fernandez, Elliott Bridges and Gary Sissons, with the returning Fernandez also kicking three goals.

Selby Warriors suffered only their second defeat of the division three season when they crashed 26-12 at home to leaders Dudley Hill ‘A’.

After conceding a brace of tries, Selby replied to lead 12-10 at half-time with Gavin Lightowler and Justin Priest crossing. Richard Stead kicked both conversions.

But in the second half Selby had no answer to the speed of the visitors at the play the ball as they ran in 16 unanswered points.

Scott Pearson was the Warriors’ man of the match.

Selby Warriors ‘A’ moved off the bottom of division seven with a gutsy 10-4 victory at home to Odsal Sedbergh ‘A’.

The win – only the ‘A’ team’s second of the season – avenged a 74-0 defeat in the reverse fixture earlier in the season.

Veteran forward Chris Wagstaff made the breakthrough for the Warriors and Nick Weaver goaled.

It was soon 10-0 when John Harrison took a ball from Jimmy Hanson and barged over the line.

Odsal crossed the whitewash in the second half, but were unable to break the resistance of Selby for whom Jason Robey was man of the match.

Hosts Heworth ‘A’ drew 32-32 with Eastmoor Dragons ‘A’ in CMS Yorkshire League division three.

Dave Gardner latched onto a pass from Gary Watkinson to race 40 metres for a superb opening try for Heworth, goaled by Watkinson.

The Dragons quickly drew level with a converted try before Heworth debutant Jonathon Cambridge crashed over.

The visitors again equalised on the stroke of half-time.

After the break, Josh Bolam edged the hosts in front with a deserved try, but the Wakefield side then added three converted tries for a 14-point lead.

The Villagers dug deep and the outstanding Watkinson crossed for two tries, both of which he goaled.

In the dying minutes, Eastmoor added a further try, but Heworth stormed back with a try for man of the match Gardner to score his second and Watkinson levelled.

In division two, York Acorn ‘A’ were 30-0 winners over Kinsley Raiders.
