Heworth ‘A’ crowned a superb season with a hard-earned 34-20 victory over Commercial Cougars in the Yorkshire League division four play-off final.

Heworth, the league winners, started well in difficult, blustery conditions at Elmpark Way, and were first on the scoreboard when centre Danny Sinclair dummied his way over after a 30-metre run. Skipper Gary Watkinson goaled.

With defences on top, play became a little ragged but, after Heworth conceded two penalties, the Cougars equalised on 25 minutes with a converted try.

The Villagers then stepped up a gear and were rewarded with tries from Paul Thompson, following a good run, and centre Sean Brough, who was on hand to collect a superb off-load from substitute Martin Jackson.

Neither try was converted and the half-time score was 14-6.

Heworth got a rude awakening after the break when Dewsbury produced a ten-point salvo in the first six minutes with two tries and a goal to take a 16-14 lead.

An upset appeared on the cards but the hosts settled and, with Paul Gill, Dave Varley and Kevin Gott leading from the front, Heworth finally took a hold on the game when Ben Potter squeezed over in the corner to touch down.

His effort was closely followed by a Joe Murphy special when he raced over from close in.

The Cougars did not give in and were rewarded with another good try before Heworth wrapped up the game with a late penalty from Gary Watkinson and a smartly taken try from Mark Watkinson.

Heworth were well served by Sam Johnson, Paul Watson, Chris Taylor and Rich Rogers.

The trophy, on the back of the ‘A’ team’s league win and promotion for the first team in the National Conference League, was presented by BARLA chairman Spen Allison.
