IN-FORM York Acorn ARLC stormed into the second round of the Challenge Cup with a 40-18 victory at Hull Wyke.

Acorn, who are chasing promotion in National Conference division one and are still in the BARLA National Cup, extended their impressive string of results with an assured display.

After falling behind to a seventh minute converted try, the York side hit back with a touchdown from man of the match Dave Burns, converted by Leigh Rientoul.

Jonny Liddell then added a second score to make it 10-6.

The home side hit back with a converted try, but tries from Daz Callaghan and Danny Caldwell gave the Blue and Golds a 20-12 half-time lead.

Acorn took command after the break with a try by Stephen Waldron, while Rientoul marked his debut after switching from Heworth with a try, showing his pace from 30 yards and then goaling.

Further tries by Callaghan and Liddell, with one goaled by Rientoul, stretched the lead.

The victory came at a cost for Acorn, with Mike Embleton suffering a rib cartilage injury and Jason Smith damaging his shoulder.

Meanwhile, Heworth suffered a 58-4 defeat at Wath Brow Hornets in round one.

A depleted Heworth side trailed 30-0 at the break and they had to wait until the closing stages to break their duck, Sean Brough crossing from a Gary Watkinson pass.

The Villagers' man of the match was Jon Jewitt, and he was well supported by Joe Murphy and Chris Varley.
