ANOTHER Heworth ARLC junior has received a scholarship contract with the City of Hull Academy - a move which could see him follow in his grandfather's footsteps.

Under-16s loose-forward Leon Watkinson is the third Villagers youngster to put pen to paper with the Hull Kingston Rovers and Hull FC joint venture since the turn of the year, after Charlie Severs and Callum Rutland.

It could be the first move towards the KR team, for whom his grandfather, the former Great Britain international and Heworth player and coach Dave Watkinson, starred in the late 1970s and 1980s.

Leon featured in Hull's one scholarship fixture so far this term, a 38-18 defeat to Warrington Wolves.

A spokesperson for Heworth said: "Leon has been a key member of the team throughout and helps lead the team with a direct and uncompromising game.

"Congratulations to Leon from everyone at the club. It is a very well-deserved opportunity to take his rugby career forward and perhaps follow in his granddad’s footsteps to Hull KR."
