SCOTT RHODES has backed Tim Stubbs to star in the National Conference League this season as he welcomes the young prop back into the match-day squad for Saturday’s visit of Myton Warriors (2.30pm).

Stubbs has won four man-of-the-match awards already this term in six division one outings, before missing last weekend’s win at Saddleworth which left the Blue and Golds third in the table.

One of those gongs came against Shaw Cross, when he went head to head with 25-year-old former Wakefield and Salford Super League player Ben Gledhill, who is spending the summer with the Sharks having returned from rugby union with Darlington.

Stubbs back at Acorn after a spell with York City Knights, where he was earmarked as one for the future as an up-and-coming reserve, is still only 19.

Said Rhodes: “Davey Burns is unavailable this weekend but that gives Tim an opportunity to come back in. Tim’s won four man-of-the-match awards this year already so it’s not a bad replacement is it?”

Asked if he could yet make his mark in the pro game, Rhodes said: “We will see. It’s just important for his development that he’s enjoying it. I think he’s happy, he’s enjoying his rugby at the minute.

“He wasn’t enjoying it at York for whatever reason, whether it was to do with not playing regularly I dont know.

“He’s got ability. He played against a Shaw Cross prop who’s played about 25 Super League games and he totally dominated him, so what does that tell you.”

Rhodes is otherwise likely to stick with a similar squad as last week, though the in-form Josh Mortimer faces a fitness test.

Heworth, who have won both their games so far in Yorkshire Men’s League division two, host Shaw Cross ‘A’, who have won two from three, on Saturday.

Acorn ‘A’, who have likewise won both their games in division one, go to Bentley.

A York Lokomotive squad are flying out to Spain for another go at the Majorca Beach Rugby Festival this weekend after an enjoyable maiden tour last year. There are 48 teams in total split into six groups, with group games on Saturday and knockout matches on Sunday.
