A SQUAD of 19 up-andcoming York City Baths Club swimmers claimed an eye-catching seventh place at a recent East Yorkshire gala.

The York youngsters took on rivals from 20 other clubs in the South Axholme Swimming Club event in Beverley.

Individual honours went to Sophie Brown, who finished second place overall in the events for 13-year-old girls, while club-mate Jack Mayfield was third in the ten-year-old boys category and Genna Suddes was third-placed nine-year-old girl, recording a clean sweep of personal best times in her five swims.

Out of the 69 swims by York members, a total of 31 speeding tickets were issued for swims which were better than the entry grade.

Also 50 personal bests were registered by the squad, with Suddes’ full house of PBs being matched by Brown, Robert Fox, Annabel Gibbs, David Grieves and Laura Jeal.

Top ten finishes in individual events were recorded by the following swimmers:

• Hannah Baker – fourth in 50 metre breaststroke

• Sophie Brown – second in 50m butterfly and 50m breaststroke

• Amelia Browne – first in 50m butterfly, seventh in 50m breaststroke

• Eleanor Dodd – sixth in 50m butterfly

• Robert Fox – fourth in 50m butterfly, fifth in 50m freestyle and breaststroke, sixth in 50m backstroke

• Annabel Gibbs – second in 50m freestyle, third in 50m backstroke

• David Grieves – ninth in 50m breaststroke

• Jack Mayfield – first in 50m breaststroke, second in 50m butterfly, eighth in 50m freestyle

• Rowan Palmour – third in 50m freestyle, eighth in 50m breaststroke

• Stafford Swainston – fourth in 50m butterfly and freestyle, seventh in 50m breaststroke.
