TEAM Jorvik swimmer Chloe Buck struck gold at the UK School Games in Gateshead.

The 13-year-old was York and North Yorkshire’s only gold medallist, winning the 100 metres breaststroke in the disability category.

Representing England North, Buck clocked a new personal best time of one minute 38.38 seconds – five seconds clear of her nearest rival.

Wetherby’s Sophie Taylor, 14, was sixth in the 100m breaststroke and was fifth with England North in the team medley.

In the track and field section a host of county athletes represented Gateshead, who finished seventh in the regional medal table.

Whitby’s Grace Rodgers, 16, won silver in the 800m, while York 16-year-old Tom Kimpson was seventh in the 400m and Bridlington sprinter Ben Marshall, 16, was seventh in the 200m.

Whitby-based Darren Mills, 16, won a bronze medal in the javelin with a throw of 45.20m, while Pickering’s Rebecca Tunnicliffe was sixth in the girls’ event with a throw of 35.43m.

City of York Athletics Club hammer thrower Sam Blain, 16, was fifth in Gateshead. His best effort was 52.75m.

British Youth champion Caitlin Chang, 17, of Harrogate, finished sixth in fencing’s epee category, while Fiona Harris, 18, of Boroughbridge, was eighth.

Pocklington School pupil Abigail Brant was a member of the England hockey team at the Games.

The 17-year-old, of Fridaythorpe, helped the team to victories over Scotland and Wales, but England were beaten by Ulster.
