HAIL New Earswick Primary School, who went through the High 5s netball tournament without losing a match and amassing a total of 35 points.

They topped seven other schools led by Ralph Butterfield (Blacks) who had 30 points, Headlands, Skelton, Robert Wilkinson, Wigginton (Blues), Ralph Butterfield (Jade) and Wigginton (Reds).

This year was the 25th such event started by Val Kennedy of Haxby Netball Club who initially ran the event after a schools’ tournament at Joseph Rowntree school in April 1985 had to be abandoned because of snow.

There has only been one year when the tournament was not held due to a new surface relaid at the Haxby club, who provide individual medals and trophies for the winning team. Each child who takes part receives a certificate.

After the first six years the then headmaster of Ralph Butterfield School bought a trophy for the winners.

Although since retired from his post, Mr T Booth, came along to present the trophy to New Earswick on the Silver Jubilee occasion.
