THE all-conquering rugby union first team at Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate near York have lifted the British Colleges National Cup.

The squad beat Blackheath Rugby Academy 22-12 in the final at Stourbridge RUFC.

“It was a brilliant game and a brilliant victory for us,” said Rob Rawlinson, director of rugby.

“The lads played formidable rugby against tough competition and all their weeks and months of training, dedication and practice certainly paid off. I am very proud of them all.”

Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate runs a rugby academy supported by the Yorkshire Carnegie England Rugby Academy staff and the programme is led by former dual-code international rugby player Henry Paul.

The school offers three elite pathways for rugby players, which are age specific.

“This has been a terrific win for QE,” said Paul, rugby programmes manager.

“We have always had a great calibre of rugby player at QE but without doubt our relationship with Yorkshire Carnegie and the top level coaching that our students receive has really proved successful.”

QE are hosting an open day on Saturday, May 9, from 10.30am to 3.30pm.
