YOUNGSTERS from St Martin’s Ampleforth have been crowned joint Under-13s Yorkshire Cup winners.
St Martin’s and Silcoates of Wakefield could not be separated in the final and it was decided to share the title, with the Ampleforth school’s name going on the trophy for the first time.
From the outset of the 11-a-side competition at Weetwood in Leeds, St Martin’s looked strong and they played magnificent hockey to notch convincing wins over Thirsk, Harrogate Grammar, QEGS Wakefield and Kettlethorpe to proceed to the semis.
In the semi-finals, they beat Pocklington 2-1 to earn a place in the final, where sheer grit and determination earned them a scoreless draw.
Coach Paul Arnold said: “This was an exhibition of quality, control and discipline.”
The squad included James Barber, Finlay Breese, James Clements-Byren, Joshua Connor, Carlos de los Santos, Hector Denny, Alvaro Garcia, Ernesto Lopez, Juan Marques, Hugh Myers, Tom Tom Scott-Masson and Theo Smerdon.
