ANGLING match action has been thin on the ground but the pick of the river action centred around Tadcaster and Nun Monkton.

Tony Parr extended his recent good run of form on the Wharfe at Tadcaster in a Leeds Angling Association contest with a chub-dominated performance from peg one.

Using the stick and caster, Parr beat 14 chub and added a late barbel to see 28lb 11oz go on the weight card.

In close contention with 25lb 5oz was John Mathers at peg 14, where he alternated between waggler and bomb to take 16 chub to include fish to 2lb 8oz in his final tally.

Result: 1 Tony Parr, Glen 28-11-0; 2 John Mathers, Leeds, 25-5-0; 3 Kev Moore, Aireborough, 17-4-0; 4 Trev Wheatley, Leeds, 10-15-0; 5 Chris Burton, Tadcaster, 9-6-0; 6 Eddie Storey, Leeds, 9-2-0; 7 Steve Matchel, Leeds, 9-1-0; 8 Barbara Jeffries, Leeds, 8-10-0.

A low and clear Ouse saw few big fish taken in the Leeds Summer League on Sunday, but Trev Hewitt at peg 39 on the Nun Monkton length found perch to the 1lb-mark with tip-fished worm and added roach to 10oz on pole and maggot for a 10lb 8oz win.

Leading the rest with 7lb 11oz was Jim Jordan, who used waggler and maggot in six feet of water at Moor Monkton's peg 21 to take a 40 fish net of roach.

Result: 1 Trev Hewitt, Sensas Tackle-2-U, 10-8-0; 2 Jim Jordan, Leeds Angling, 7-11-0; 3 Mick Wood, Pontefract, 6-11-0; 4 Bob Foster, Sensas Tackle-2-U, 5-14-0; 5 Dave Wilkinson, Selby, 5-1-0; 6 Tony Hewson, Leeds Angling, 4-14-0; 7 Pete Hyde, Leeds Angling, 4-13-0; 8 Mick Shaw, Hirst Tackle, 4-12-0.

Tales of our carp capers

WITH the rivers desperately needing a top-up of rain water your correspondent’s barbel fishing exploits have met with little success in recent weeks.

In search of pastures new, my two sons and I have been trying to catch a few carp from some of the many excellent ponds in the York area. Pictured here are a couple of nice doubles that we tempted this week.

Izaak Starkey, nine, is pictured with a nice mirror carp that fell to a piece of flouro pop-up fished in conjunction with a zig rig from Lingroft Farm pond, near Fulford. His brother, Matthew, seven, is pictured holding a lovely ghost common carp that was the highlight of a great session at the Poole Bridge Farm complex.

We fished with method feeder and pellet on the Carp Lake for a dozen fish between 8lb and 11lb. Other anglers fishing pole tactics also caught plenty of quality carp with marginal tactics seeming to be the order of the day.

Laybourne Lakes closure

THE Laybourne Lakes complex will be closed to angling from Monday, September 20 to Friday, September 24.

The York and District Amalgamation of Anglers has announced the closure, which will allow a major maintenance programme along the approach track to take place.

There may be a further closure for three days of the week starting Monday, September 27.

A notice has been fixed to the board next to the dipping tanks on Marley pool showing the list of match bookings for the rest of the season on Marley and Brown’s pools. Details of clubs and pegging appear in this column every Friday.
