YORK Squash Club’s Neil Chambers completed a fine hat-trick when he won the York and District veteran and vintage title for the third year in succession.

In the tournament for the over-40 and o-50 age groups, held at Wigginton, Chambers beat York RI’s Robbie Fineron in the final.

Chambers cruised through the first game 9-1, but Fineron rallied, saving two game-balls to win the second 10-8. Fineron again was in control in the third taking a 5-0 lead before triumphing 9-3.

The fourth game was brutal with errors creeping in from both players before Chambers fought back from 7-6 down to take the game 9-7.

It was toe to toe in the deciding set, but Chambers found his range with his drop-shot to devastating effect and pulled away to prevail 9-5.

The veterans’ plate final was won by Stillington’s Duncan Cook, a 3-1 winner over York SC’s Phil Duck.

The vintage event was ravaged by withdrawals and injuries before Wigginton’s Ian Cordell used his trademark backhand volley dropshot to beat Dunnington’s Dave Booth 3-0.
