Fulford’S Mike Walsh became the sixth player to win the York Conservative Clubs’ Fosters Challenge Snooker Trophy in the nine years of the competition when he defeated Roger Ward (Malton) 3-1 in the final at Bootham.

Ward (0 handicap) went 22-8 ahead in the first frame before Walsh countered with a 25 break before winning the frame 59-28.

In the second frame, Ward was left a good opening but finished on a straight pink.

Walsh then cleared to black for a 23 break to win the frame 64-21 for a 2-0 lead.

In the third frame, Ward potted the brown off the colours and Walsh conceded with the scores 67-31.

Walsh kept Ward out of the game in the fourth frame and steadily built up his score to lead 49-11.

Then, after Ward had fouled, Walsh potted the last four reds with colours to win the frame 77-16.

Malton ‘A’ took advantage of Heworth ‘A’s free week to move within two points of the leaders with a 6-1 victory over Acomb ‘B’ in the Conservative Clubs’ Carlsberg UK Snooker League.

Acomb’s Eric Leatt levelled after Phil Hart had won the first frame. D Dawson, Roger Ward (31 break), Tim Foggin, Dave Coulthard and Simon Weatherill (38 bk) completed the win for Malton.

Heworth ‘A’ remain favourites for the title as they have a game in hand on Malton, although both teams meet in Malton’s last match.

Fulford ‘B’ exchanged places with Heworth ‘B’ as they moved into fourth spot and they look odds-on for the John Smith’s ‘B’ Team Cup.

Jim Rollinson, Tom Wilson, Andy Hurley, John Adcock and Bob Smith sealed the win before Lionel Barnes and Paul Mahoney gained Bootham’s points for a 5-2 Fulford success.

Nick Dyson (Malton) made a 67 break this week but Weatherill (M) continues as leader in the North Wolds Printers highest break competition with his 92.

Heworth visited Acomb in the final round of matches in the York Conservative Clubs’ Slater Cup Snooker Pairs League with both teams level on points knowing the winners would be league champions.

They went into a 3-0 lead with an 87 aggregate advantage before George Rawlings and Mike Bowker had a 65-20 success for Acomb.

Peter Hodgson and Keith Watkinson killed the recovery by winning the next game which secured the match for Heworth and, although Larry Atmore and Barry Fletcher won the last frame for Acomb, Heworth easily earned the aggregate for a 5-2 victory.

Heworth stumbled to a fourth consecutive championship in the York Conservative Clubs’ Faber Shield Billiards League despite losing 5-2 to Acomb helped by Bootham ‘A’ defeating Fulford.

Heworth’s Gary Rogers (88, 40 breaks) won the first game before John Ashwell and Keith Myers nudged Acomb ahead.

Jason Milner (29 bk) levelled but Adrian Barraclough held off Steve Burdett (35 bk) and Trevor Ventress decided the match for Acomb.
