PARIS SMITH is through to the semi-finals of the schoolgirls European Championships after earning a bye in her quarter-final.

Smith, who fights out of the Legions Gym in Clifton Moor, will take on the winner of Alnera Brahimi from Kosovo or Ukrainian Olha Pylypchuk in Friday's semi-final at the Georgian capital of Tbilisi.

By doing so, Smith will make history by becoming the first female boxer from the city of York to represent England at a major international tournament.

She has also guaranteed herself a medal at the tournament, with bronze medals going to the two losing semi-finalists.

Should the lightweight prove successful in her semi-final, she will fight whoever wins the contest between Irish representative Ava Rose Henry Lyndon and Turkey’s Sudenaz Ballioglu for the gold medal on Sunday.

Earlier this year, Smith won a national title via a second-round knockout, becoming the third fighter from the club win such an accolade in the tournament, alongside Riley Holmes and Riley Edeson.

Smith and Legions Gym are sponsored by SAY Scaffolding and My Reset - Massage Therapist.
