YORK RI Corinthians have made a strong start to the York Amateur Bowling Association League division one outdoor season with two successive 8-0 wins.

Theirs was the only game playable on the opening weekend, which was otherwise a washout due to rain, with Corinthians enjoying a convincing win over Dringhouses. Corinthians then showed no mercy on Monday against a Clifton side returning to the top tier.

Also on Monday, last year's league champions, Holgate WMC, lost 7-1 on a tricky green at Haxby Road.

Wins for Gary Bunce and Jeff Dobbin over Phil Emmerson and Gary Lewington, respectively, swung the game in the hosts' favour.

Alan Smith and Jan Suchecki had the closest game of the night. It was nip-and-tuck all the way, with the Haxby Road skipper saving his side on a number of occasions.

Steve Lea provided the glimmer of hope for the champions with a convincing victory over Mal Lewars.

In division two, West Park enjoyed a 6-2 win at Harrogate while Poppleton Road overcame Minster 8-0. Copmanthorpe hosted Retreat and took home advantage to win 7-1.

The two relegated sides from last term faced up at Hull Road Park, where the hosts came out on top over Osbaldwick 6-2.

Scarcroft's game at Stamford Bridge was postponed.

These games came in the week following YABA's customary outdoor bowls season-opener against the C&IU League at York RI Bowls Club. YABA came out on top in the six rinks held.

Entries for the county two wood singles at York RI will be taken up to noon on the day of the competition - Sunday, May 26 - for a 12.30pm start.
