CITY of York Athletic Club shot-putter Scott Lincoln has broken a 57-year-old record with his best-ever season-opening throw of 19 metres.

At the Yorkshire Championships in Cudworth this weekend, Lincoln topped Arthur Rowe's 1962 championship record of 18.96m to take the gold.

Though not quite eight-time British champion Lincoln's official best (a 19.59m in 2016), it is a good result from the first competition of the season.

Coach Paul Wilson said: "It's what we wanted to do - that was one of our targets, to break that record.

"He's pleased to have broken it, it's been held for a long time and it's a hard record to beat.

"He was pleased to do that and get it out of the way. There's always a bit of pressure when it's the first one."

Lincoln had been struggling with a back niggle but Wilson reports he is making a good recovery.
