CITY of York Athletics Club hurdler Emily Maude clocked the fourth-fastest under-13 time in the UK this year at Wakefield’s Thornes Park Stadium.

Maude clocked 11.77 seconds over 70 metres in one of the stand-out performances at the Spring Open competition.

York took 40 competitors to the West Yorkshire meeting and went on to claim eight gold, 14 silver and eight bronze medals on the track, as well as six gold, 10 silver and two bronze in the field.

Other eye-catching runs included George Pye grabbing two bronzes in the U15 100m and 200m sprints during his first-ever athletics competition, while senior one-lap specialist Charlotte Stamp crossed the 400m line with a new personal best time of 56.97 seconds.

The outstanding field achievement saw Carmen Brooks throw a new personal best of 10.87 metres, which represented an improvement of 1.5m and was the reward for the athlete and coach Jon Sewell’s perseverance over the last few months.

City of York’s “run, jump, throw” approach in training is now really starting to pay dividends with many of the junior athletes claiming new personal bests and gaining vital experience before the new Youth Development League season starts on Saturday, April 27.

Many club athletes will also compete at Hull again this Sunday before testing themselves in the club’s first Summer League event the following day.
