UNIVERSITY 'A' made it through a busy three-game week in Red Goat York & District Table Tennis League division one, losing only to Coneysthorpe 'A'.

They showed no mercy as they thrashed York RI ‘B’ 10-0 and followed this up with an 8-2 win over Shiyi Ling 'B', with Calum Goodwin unbeaten in both fixtures.

They were brought down to earth by Coneysthorpe, whose Martin Lowe was too good in the 6-4 reversal.

Aidan Ranftler excelled as Clarence ‘A’ edged a close encounter with Topspin ‘B’ 6-4 while Mikey Arnold and Bryan Birbeck were on top form as Shiyi Ling ‘A’ thumped Clarence ‘B’ 9-1.

Clarence ‘D’ boosted their division two survival hopes with a shock 8-2 demolition of Shepherds 'A'. Gary Bunce led the way with a treble and he was well supported by Richard Day and Chris Maude, who both contributed braces.

York RI ‘C’ took a firm grip on the title race as Ady McLaren and Andy Kirk led the way in a 9-1 victory over Clarence 'E' while a maximum from Stephen Temple was needed by Ryedale ‘A’ to see off a battling Poppleton 6-4.

University ‘A’ and Bootham ‘A’ drew 5-5, with student Michael Connolly unbeaten.

The division three promotion positions are starting to look settled as both Wigginton ‘B’ and Strensall ‘B’ recorded emphatic victories.

Mark Hodgson and Sam Crutchley were untroubled as Wigginton cruised to an 8-2 win over Shiyi Ling ‘C’ while Dave Hough and John Temple contributed maximums as Strensall beat Clarence ‘G’ by the same scoreline. Mike Surtees and Paul Kozyra were undefeated as Shepherds ‘B’ crushed South Bank 9-1 while Ed Wardman and Dave Burnham starred as Ryedale ‘B’ thrashed BT ‘B’ 8-2.

York RI ‘E’ picked up an excellent 7-3 victory over BT ‘A’, with Alex Kirk's treble the highlight.

BT ‘B’ who came up trumps in the crunch relegation battle, beating a depleted South Bank 7-3.

Wigginton ‘C’ moved a step closer to securing the fourth division title after Nathan Fairburn and Ian Oxborough steered them to a 9-1 triumph over Shepherds 'C'.

Wigginton ‘D’ look certain of second place with a Leszek Kozak treble helping them to an 8-2 over Shiyi Ling 'D'.

A maximum from Kieran Podbury could not prevent Clarence ‘H’ clinching only their second victory of the season, 6-4 against University ‘D’, while a man-of-the-match effort from Tony Fairburn was in vain as his Wigginton ‘E’ went down 6-4 to York RI 'G'.
