YORK Knavesmire Harriers Ladies continued their successful winter campaign, finishing an outstanding 11th place at the English National Cross Country Championships.

In the senior men's race, Harriers finished 47th out of 144, with Kim Critchley leading the pack of 20 Mire athletes, finishing 123rd.

Knavesmire's first four at the five-mile race were Cross (33rd), Nik Tarrega (59th), Becky Penty (96th) and Katie Smith (126th) in a field of more than 1,000 runners.

The running club - celebrating its 40th anniversary this year - was well-represented at the event, with just fewer than 20 ladies of all abilities toeing the start line.

Both men's and ladies' races were held at Harewood House.

The Mire ladies this season have already won the West Yorkshire League, and finished fourth at the Yorkshire Championships and fifth at the North of England Championships.

Meanwhile, leading runner Helen Cross has been picked to represent Yorkshire at the Inter-Counties at Loughborough next Saturday, March 9.
