YORK Indoor Bowls Club won the Yorkshire League division one title with a game to spare after beating Leeds 106-63.

At home, Neal Macdonald, Graham Brooke, Jeff Normanton and Phil Emmerson dropped nine shots in four ends to go from 12-9 ahead to 18-12 behind and they lost 20-16.

However, John Whiteley, Alan Hampshire, Mark Clarke and Tony Horobin, having led only 11-9 after 13 ends stormed to a 27-12 victory, while both away rinks were on top form.

Alan Vowles, Mick Cooney, Malcolm Lewars and Craig Newton won 36-12, and Phil Parsons, Jack Woodworth, John Crowe and Dave Stroughair triumphed 27-19.

York complete their season against North Cave on Saturday, starting at noon.

York 'B' stayed in the division two promotion race by beating Leeds 'B' 110-53, picking up 12 points to go second.

At home, Harley Wenham, David White, Malcolm Harrison and Dave Dale comfortably won 25-12, whereas Charlie Arnett, Allen Clapham, Ray Calpin and Malcolm Thompson lost their last four ends to go down 24-17.

Away, Ken Simpson, Pete Riley, Gordon Fennell and Mal Bulmer led 32-1 after only 10 ends and easily won 42-6, while Ken Griffiths, Pete Waring, Pete Bradley and Graham Instone won 26-12.

York 'B' need to beat New Earswick in their final game on Saturday at noon to guarantee promotion.

In division three, York 'C' fell 72-65 to bottom team Doncaster 'B'.

Wally Darbyshire, Noel Mallen, Dave Dearlove and Ray Clark picked up their team's only victorious rink as they pulled away from 15-15 to win 19-17.

Also at home, Dennis Walls, Jack Parsons, Gordon Walker and Jim Robertson led 19-6 after 13 ends but lost 21-20, while, away, Colin Robinson, Trevor Scott, Dave Preece and Mick Snowden lost 18-13 and Andy Lockwood, Mal Rankeillor, Dave Clarke and Tony Bryan lost 16-13.

York 'C' need to beat New Earswick 'B' on Saturday, starting at noon, to guarantee a place in the Hebden Challenge Cup.

Both York Knights and York Romans concluded their Yorkshire Over-55s League campaigns with victories.

The Knights, already guaranteed the runners-up spot, beat third-placed North Cave Yellow 85-71, picking up 10 of the 14 points at stake.

The away teams ended with a narrow three-shot deficit at 42-39. Harley Wenham, Dave Clarke, Dave Dearlove and Geoff Walker won 19-18 with a single on the last, while Wally Darbyshire, Eric Hodgson, David White and Pete Bradley went down 24-20 after a minor comeback.

At home, Allen Clapham, Dave Holder, Ray Calpin and Malcolm Thompson soon cleared the deficit as they led 19-3 after 11 ends and went on to win 31-10.

Charlie Arnett, Ken Robinson, Dave Elcock and Ray Clark trailed for most of their game but came back well and drew level 15-15 going into the last, only to be outdone chasing the winner as they dropped a four.

The Romans got their second win of term by beating Leeds 'B' 77-70 with two winning rinks.

Away, John Munday, Norman Ellis, Alan Braithwaite and Gordon Walker lost 22-17, but Andy Lockwood, Noel Mallen, Dennis Walls and Trevor Scott won 18-11.

At home, Ray Wynn, Ian Mackland, Mal Rankeillor and Alan Yoward won 26-15, with Colin Robinson, David Maughan-Brown, John Sandle and Allan May losing 22-16 but coming back late on to help York bag the aggregate.

Tomorrow, York IBC host the Mason Trophy quarter-final between Durham and Lincoln starting at noon, and, on Sunday, they host the Civil Service Triples National qualifying competition.
